A strong northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, as a front moves across the North Island, weakening as it goes. Meanwhile, another front moves across the South Island during the day.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy areas, a few showers possible mainly afternoon / evening. Breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Some morning rain then clearing to sunny areas, further showers develop later in the evening. Breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-20

Eastern North Island

High cloud with a few spots of rain, moving through the Wairarapa in the morning then further north early afternoon before clearing away to some sun. Winds breezy from the northwest, although winds may rise to gale about the Wairarapa in the evening.
Highs: 23-25

Wellington

Morning rain clears then sunny areas develop, chance of a further shower late evening. Strong to gale northwesterly winds.
High: 18

Marlborough & Nelson

Early showers clear then mainly sunny, chance of a further shower spreading from the west later in the evening. Strong northwesterly winds possibly gusting to gale at times in the afternoon.
Highs: 20-21

Canterbury

Mostly sunny, chance of a spot of rain late afternoon / evening with rain heavy up in the high country around the same time as a front moves through. Northwesterly winds, strong to gale in the afternoon, especially inland.
Highs: 20-21

West Coast

Showers then rain in the afternoon with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, gusty west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-16

Southland & Otago

Mostly cloudy with showers, starting out about Southland in the morning then moving into Otago in the afternoon. Breezy northwesterly winds tend more westerly in the afternoon, westerlies may rise to gale about the Southland coastline.
Highs: 13-16
