Strong northwesterlies lie over the upper half of the South Island and lower North Island today, watch for gales in exposed parts of Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa. Heavy rain on the West Coast eases about North Westland and Buller during the afternoon.

Mostly sunny with northerly breezes, winds tend northwest by midday with a little more cloud about.
High: 26

Auckland & Northland

Mostly sunny this morning with light northerlies, winds tend northwesterly
by midday and slowly increase. Cloud thickens in the evening then overnight
showers move in to Auckland and western Northland.
Highs: 26-27

Central North Island, Lake Taupo, Waikato
& Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells with increasing northwesterly winds, cloud increases in the
afternoon with rain moving into the Central North Island in the evening then
further north overnight. The Bay Of Plenty may see a shower or two late
afternoon then clearing for a time.
Highs: 22-25

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud with northwesterlies, strong in the afternoon for
Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Winds will be strong to gale force for much of the day
about the Wairarapa. Rain moves into the Wairarapa late afternoon then clears
evening, areas of rain although not as persistent as in Wairarapa move into
Hawkes Bay later in the evening then Gisborne overnight.

Western North Island

Becoming cloudy this morning, rain develops mid to late afternoon with a
heavy fall or two possible then easing later in the evening to showers.
Northwesterly winds becoming strong after midday then easing later on.
Highs: 21-24

Wellington

Cloudy with the odd spit of rain becoming persistent in the afternoon,
winds strong to gale force from the north. Rain clears in the evening with winds
easing.
Highs: 19-20

Nelson & Kateriteri

Cloudy with occasional rain becoming heavy for a time in the afternoon.
Rain eases mid afternoon and clears by evening as strong northerlies change
westerly then ease.
Highs: 22-23

Marlborough

Cloudy with the odd spit, strong to gale northwesterly winds. More
persistent rain moves through in the afternoon then clears in the evenign with
winds easing.
High: 25

Canterbury

A period of rain this morning, possibly heavy about the foothills clears by
late morning. Becoming mostly sunny once rain clears with brisk north to
northeasterly winds changing strong northwesterly.
Highs: 24-26

West Coast

Heavy rain with possible thunderstorms, easing to showers late morning as
strong northerlies change westerly.
Highs: 18-19

Coastal Otago

Sunny at first with northerly winds, a west to southwest change early
afternoon brings showers which clear later in the evening.
Highs: 20-22

Southland & Central Otago

Sunny spells at first with northerly winds, westerlies freshen late morning
bringing showers. Showers clear from inland areas in the evening.
Highs: 17-20
