Weekend Newsfeed: Mild subtropical winds ahead of late Sunday cold front

Subtropical winds will lift temperatures over 8 degrees above average for some parts of New Zealand this weekend (compared to what is usually recorded at this time of year – it may still feel cold though).

Where specifically large high pressure zones are centred matters a lot. Think of them as giant anti-clockwise roundabouts in the sky, but instead of traffic it moves air. The high pressure zone east of NZ is going to pull down subtropical air, therefore making many places warmer than usual – along with a low pressure zone forming in the southern Tasman Sea which will help ramp up the nor’west flow this weekend.

Put short, northerly quarter winds ramp up more (and turn more north-west) on Sunday as a cold front approaches bringing a band of rain, hopefully into some dry regions, across Sunday and clearing Monday morning.

This coming week – it’s a whole new ball game. Low pressure, westerlies, southerlies and subantarctic air may produce severe winter weather later in the week. SUNDAY:
Here comes the cold front – but before it arrives for most regions a much warmer than normal airflow (for this time of year) will move in from the subtropics … and if you don’t have the subtropical part you likely have a windy nor-wester. Either way, Sunday is shaping up to be warmer than usual.

Rain sets into the West Coast and heavy falls are possible. Rain moves into the North Island later on Sunday or overnight and into Monday morning. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible as the cold front moves in.
