Friday downpours, Saturday colder, frost risk Sunday, Milder Monday

Spring is continuing to do it’s thing. More changeable weather is moving through, although it’s not as stormy/active as it was back in September and October.

Low pressure is falling apart over NZ for Friday bringing heavy downpours to the North Island from the west and a colder change in the lower South Island.

Let’s get into the forecast for Friday to start with…

RAIN:
Rain and showers on the South Island’s West Coast, with a band of heavy rain or heavy showers moving into the western North Island with isolated thunderstorms. Some showery weather and patchy rain around parts of the lower South Island too.

WIND:
North to NW winds continue for northern NZ but southerly quarter winds arrive in the South Island on Friday. Central areas don’t have a lot of wind – especially the upper half of the South Island, but more westerly driven in the lower North Island.

TEMPERATURES:
It’s another mild day for most of NZ but that colder air now moves into the South Island and spreads into the North Island on Saturday.

WEEKEND AND INTO NEXT WEEK
On Saturday that colder (or cooler) southerly change heads across the rest of the South Island and then up and over the North Island, dropping temperatures for most (especially in the southern half) and driving in showers to eastern parts of NZ. Those showers also move into the North Island, mostly leaning to the south and east of the island – because high pressure is building in the west.

On Sunday high pressure covers New Zealand – and following the colder southerly of Saturday that means there is a chance of frost through the interior of the South Island. But Sunday afternoon looks milder than Saturday afternoon was in many regions, however Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne will be colder.

By Monday and Tuesday more warmth returns to the country thanks to west to north-west winds, but they turn slightly cooler west to south-west by Wednesday. High pressure may start to increase later next week again around NZ – but we’ll confirm that on Monday.
