Cold front heads north, cooler in the south, blustery westerly flow in exposed places (+3 Maps)

Wednesday is another windy day over parts of New Zealand with west to south-west winds blowing and a cold front moving over the North Island, then clearing.

Let’s get into the forecast for Wednesday to begin with…

RAIN:
A band of rain and showers moves over the North Island today in the form of a fairly weak cold front, followed by more showers and larger dry spells. Southland and Westland take the majority of the showers today with snow on the southern ranges and the Southern Alps.

WIND:
It’s another blustery day across many parts of the country with that west to south-west flow brisk in exposed places, possibly gale – especially in marine areas and exposed hills.

TEMPERATURES:
Temperatures are down today in many places – or may drop a little later on after that cold front has passed. In the lower South Island single digit daytime highs are possible in some areas today. Spring style!

WEEK & WEEKEND AHEAD
On Thursday high pressure centred over the Tasman Sea inches closer to NZ and does bring more settled weather to much of the South Island but showers or some wet weather may linger over the southern half of the North Island in particular.

Westerlies return to the South Island and lower North Island on Friday with a few remaining showers in the east of the upper North Island (due a low pressure zone that may suddenly form north-east of East Cape). Dry for most other places but rain sets back in to South Westland – and that southern rain and westerly flow is ahead of a cold front on Saturday for the south-west corner of the South Island – and this showery cooler flow spreads over the South Island on Sunday with even some wet weather moving across Canterbury, while another weak front moves into the North Island.
