Centre of low making landfall

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The centre of the low that has brought hail, thunder and tornadoes to the North Island is this evening making landfall along the Taranaki coastline.

With it the low will give one final surge of heavy showers from Taranaki to Auckland and Northland tonight.

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes it’s doubtful any showers will contain thunder.

A few isolated thunderstorms have been detected today mostly east of the North Island.

After this evening’s heavy rain or showers winds will turn more sou’westerly and should start to ease as the low moves eastwards.

Conditions remain relatively quiet over the South Island.

(Sorry South Islanders – we’re well aware the North Island has dominated the news this week!).

Hundreds of gulls were flying northward at 6pm. Following a small group of godwits.
Weather must be really turning nasty south of Auckland.
