As Auckland grapples with a fruit fly outbreak, it seems young people aren’t up to scratch with their biosecurity knowledge.
Manukau Institute of Technology’s Rajesh Ram recently surveyed Year 9 students in Auckland.
He says most didn’t know some plants and animals pose a threat to our crops and environment, and the same went for their knowledge of microorganisms.
“Students lack knowledge of whether they were capable of causing harm to animals or plants or humans.”
He says it needs to be part of school curriculum and the public also needs to be more aware of the risks.
“The discussion should be brought into the public domain so that they public can have an attitude about biosecurity.”

I bring minerals & rocks into NZ via NZ Post. In the past everything was always checked by Customs and sent to MAF. Now it comes direct to my letterbox unopened, no physical checks whatsoever. What is really disconcerting, is that some shipments I brought from China have contained a lot of soil. They came straight to my letterbox, from China. And when NZ is spending million of dollars trying to combat Kauri disease as well. This is what expediture slashing in Govt Departments does, it costs taxpayers far more in the long run. Worst of all if Akld has to be sprayed again. Somneone needs to be accountable for the nil border checks.
