AUCKLAND ELECTRICAL STORM

> From the WeatherWatch archives

These types of thunderstorms are quite unpredictable, so here is the latest info:

There has been a total of 1047 lightening stikes in the past hour, detected by the Auckland Lightening radar.  This covers quite a large area – 700kms in any direction from Auckland.

Most are confined to the Auckland regions.

They peaked at 59 strikes per minute.

They are now mostly confined to Helensville, northern Auckland, Hauraki Gulf (including Waiheke Island) and shortly the Coromandel Peninsula.

The risk for Auckland, of further thunderstorms, will ease in the next hour or two.  Isolated heavy downpours are likely all afternoon and evening.

Further smaller storms are possible overnight and again tomorrow night.

In the past 60 minutes the air temperature has dropped 4 degrees across Auckland.
