A calm Christmas in store – The Big Picture on Friday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Christmas day brings quite settled conditions across the country, with cloud, sun and some gentle breezes in store for most of the country.

The South Island sees morning cloud in areas break away to mostly sunny conditions, with onshore winds for most in the afternoon.

Over the North Island it’s a fairly cloudy start for most too, perhaps a morning shower clearing around Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, then some sun breaking through.
Late in the afternoon or into evening an isolated shower or two may develop about the Bay of Plenty, then also the ranges of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.
Winds are mainly light for the North Island, while for Northland expect southwesterly breezes for much of the day with sunny areas from morning.

A fairly settled Christmas, with the South Island and parts of the lower North Island looking best for outdoor activities, while for the remainder of the North Island, the best weather comes in the second half of the day or perhaps towards evening.
