It’s another hot day across a number of eastern regions and many parts of the North Island as west to north-west winds continue with sub-tropical connections for some.
Let’s get into the forecast for Wednesday to start with…
RAIN:
High pressure is parked over Northland and Auckland and brings dry or mostly dry weather to the North Island and much of the South Island – but rain and showers are increasing on the West Coast with heavy falls developing in the south tonight and heading northwards on Thursday.
WIND:
Winds are lighter for many places today but still blustery nor-westers around Wellington and Cook Strait and windier west to north-west winds around parts of Southland and Otago, maybe south Canterbury.
TEMPERATURES:
Hot inland and also to the north and east of both main islands with highs between 23 and 33 degrees today for many. Today is warmer than average for most regions.
DAYS AHEAD
On Thursday west to sou-west winds cover the nation and are a bit windy in exposed places with a few western and southern showers in both main islands and cooler air in the south of the South Island and western NZ – but still hot in the eastern North Island
On Friday and Saturday high pressure moves closer to NZ with a west to south-west flow – but it’s short lived with a likely storm south of the South Island on Sunday and Monday driving in yet another burst of wind and rain over the South Island from the west and keeping many eastern areas mild to hot and windier at times. Heavy rain and strong wind warnings are possible on Sunday and Monday and possibly even some snow on the southern ranges on Monday as this storm south of NZ dredges up a brief southerly.
This is still a developing forecast so we’ll have more details in our weather video today and here on RCR tomorrow morning.
