Japan: 7.3 quake generates one metre tsunami

Updated 1:04am — The USGS reported a magnitude 7.3 quake hit the east of Japan at a depth of 30kms on Friday evening.

A 1 metre tsunami reached Miyagi coastline and a warning had been issued.

There were no Pacific-wide tsunami warnings and therefore no threat to New Zealand.

As of 1am there had been no reports of damage or injury in Japan, however the earthquake was widely and moderately felt across the nation with high rise buildings reportedly swaying for several minutes in Tokyo.
