Frozen to start – Look how cold it was at 7am!

> From the WeatherWatch archives

It’s a frosty start for both islands this morning – with many regions sitting in the negatives as of 6am, both North and South.

That means there’s the potential for black ice in many places –  mainly inland this time, where snow sits on the ground.
Nearer the coast black ice may not be as much of an issue, as there has been a lack of precipitation in coastal areas before nightfall, but black ice can form anywhere it’s frosty and sheltered.

Temperatures for South Island centres as of 6am:

  • Invercargill: -2.5C (feels like -7C)
  • Gore: -3.7C (feels like -7C)
  • Dunedin: -0.3C (feels like -3C)
  • Queenstown: -5.8C (feels like -11!)
  • Alexandra: -7.6C (feels like -10)
  • Christchurch: -3C (feels like -7C)
  • Ashburton: -5.8C (feels like -9C)
  • Blenheim: 2.1C (feels like -1C)
  • Nelson: -0.8C (feels like -2C)
  • Lake Pukaki: -7C

The North Island also got off to an icy start – with many regions in the negatives further north too:

  • Taumarunui: -4.5C (feels like -7C)
  • Hamilton: -0.6C (feels like -4C)
  • Whakatane: 3.1C (feels like -1C)

Send us in any pictures of frost or cold conditions – we’ll try and get as many as possible published or retweeted – to show off our beautiful country in midwinter!
