We get a lot of photos and messages from the public every day and we see them all…but this week one slipped through, so apologies for the late ‘bring it to your attention’ but this photo — taken Monday — was just too good to not share.
Auckland is well known for four seasons in one day, the city is frequently hit by downpours then sun and warmth – from winter to summer to winter again.
Hail is also something that occurs in any season of the year in Auckland… but it’s very rare to see New Zealand’s busiest motorway turn white like snow from a hail shower (although even less likely to see it turn white from snow!).
This great photo was uploaded into our Spring photo library by Simon Williams following the hail shower on Monday this week.
At the time the photo was taken WeatherWatch.co.nz was busy sending out alerts to Aucklanders, the media and Civil Defence about the rapidly developing heavy showers with hail – and even some thunder – around South Auckland and Pukekohe area. The showers later spread further into the city before falling apart and caused few issues incredibly.
It’s all part of the “4 day low” affecting the North Island and upper South Island this week.
